FAQ
Straight answers, no fine print.
The real questions people ask before a hair transplant — answered honestly.
Is a hair transplant in Tijuana safe?
Yes — when the clinic and surgeon are right. Safety comes from the surgeon's training, modern sterile technique, and honest planning, not the country. Our surgeons are Istanbul-trained, use Sapphire FUE and DHI, and operate in a licensed medical facility. Being 20 minutes from the San Diego border also means you're never far from home or your own doctor.
How many grafts will I need, and how is that estimated?
Surgeons estimate grafts using the area-times-density method: the size of the area to restore (in cm²) multiplied by a target density (roughly 40–45 grafts/cm² at the hairline, 25–35 at the crown). Our free AI analysis estimates this from your photos in minutes; your surgeon confirms the exact plan at consultation. Most procedures fall between about 1,800 and 3,500 grafts.
How much does it cost?
Cost is driven by graft count. In Tijuana, most U.S. patients pay 60–70% less than comparable U.S. clinics, and monthly financing can spread it over 12–36 months. Use our cost calculator for a ballpark, or run the AI analysis for an estimate from your photos. The price we quote is the price you pay.
Does it hurt?
The procedure is done under local anesthetic, so you're awake and comfortable. Most discomfort is during the numbing injections at the start; after that, patients typically describe the day as long but not painful. Mild soreness for a few days afterward is normal.
What's the recovery timeline — from day one to final result?
Days 1–3: rest, sleep slightly elevated, gentle care. Days 5–7: most people return to desk work. Weeks 2–4: transplanted hairs shed (this is normal 'shock loss' — the roots stay). Months 1–3: a quiet dormant phase. Months 3–4: new growth begins. Months 6–9: noticeable density. Months 12–18: your final result. Patience is part of the process.
When will I actually see results?
Don't judge it early. The transplanted hair sheds in the first few weeks, then regrows starting around month 3–4. You'll see meaningful change by 6–9 months and the final result at 12–18 months.
Am I a good candidate?
The best candidates have pattern (androgenetic) hair loss that has stabilized, and a healthy donor area at the back and sides. Stability matters more than age, though results are most predictable around 30–50. Active, rapidly progressing loss is usually stabilized on medication first. The AI analysis and your surgeon will tell you honestly if you're a candidate.
What's the difference between FUE and DHI?
Both move individual follicles with no linear scar. FUE creates the recipient channels first, then places grafts; Sapphire FUE uses finer sapphire blades for cleaner channels. DHI uses a Choi implanter pen that creates the channel and places the graft in one motion, giving precise control over angle and density — great for hairlines. Your surgeon chooses based on your hair and goals; many plans combine them.
What lab work or pre-op preparation is needed?
Before surgery we run standard blood work (typically a complete blood count, coagulation/clotting tests, blood glucose, and infectious-disease screening such as hepatitis and HIV) to confirm you're cleared for the procedure. In the week before: avoid alcohol and smoking, and pause blood-thinning medications and supplements (like aspirin or fish oil) only with your doctor's guidance. On the day, eat a light breakfast and wear a loose button-up shirt.
What do I need to cross the border?
A valid passport or passport card. You can self-drive, use Ready Lane or SENTRI if you have it, or let us arrange a driver door-to-door. Local patients often make it a day trip; travelers fly into San Diego (SAN) and we handle the crossing.
Is the result permanent?
Transplanted follicles are taken from areas genetically resistant to balding, so they generally keep growing for life. However, your non-transplanted hair can continue to thin with age, so your surgeon may recommend maintenance (like medication) to protect your overall look. Individual results vary.
Will anyone be able to tell I had it done?
Done well, no. Natural results come from the hairline design — single-hair follicular units at the front placed at a low, natural angle, with subtle irregularity rather than a straight 'doll' line. That artistry is what separates a good result from an obvious one.
